Protease (proteolytic enzyme)
The term ‘proteolytic’ refers to all enzymes that digest protein. Other classes of enzymes include Amylase, a digestive enzyme that breaks down carbohydrates and Lipase, a digestive enzyme that breaks down fat during the digestive process. Each of these help in the digestion of food which in turn helps with absorption of those essential nutrients in the diet. In the body, proteolytic digestive enzymes are produced in the pancreas, but supplemental forms of enzymes may come from fungal or bacterial sources, extraction from the pancreas of livestock animals (trypsin/chymotrypsin) or extraction from plants (such as papain from the papaya and Bromelain from pineapples.) The primary uses of proteolytic enzymes in dietary supplements are used as digestive enzymes, anti-inflammatory agents and pain relievers.

There are a number of clinical trials showing the benefit of using oral proteolytic enzymes as a digestive aid. Proteloytic enzymes are also theorized to help reduce symptoms of food allergies and as a treatment for rheumatoid arthritis and other autoimmune diseases.

Perhaps the strongest evidence for benefits of proteolytic enzyme supplements come from numerous European studies showing various enzyme blends to be effective in accelerating recovery from exercise and injury in sportsmen as well as tissue repair inpatients following surgery. In one study of footballers suffering from ankle injuries, proteolytic enzyme supplements accelerated healing and got players back on the field about 50% faster than athletes assigned to receive a placebo tablet (1).

 

A handful of other small trials in athletes has shown enzymes can help reduce inflammation, speed healing of bruises and other tissue injuries (including fractures) and reduce overall recovery time when compared to athletes taking a placebo(2-8) In patients recovering from facial and various reconstructive surgeries, treatment with proteolytic enzymes significantly reduced swelling, bruising and stiffness compared to placebo groups.

Bromelain and Papain
Both Bromelain and Papain are plant-derived proteolytic enzymes. Bromelain, also know as bromelin, is a protein-digesting enzyme extracted from the flesh and stem of the pineapple plant, Ananas comosus. Papain is a proteolytic enzyme isolated from the papaya plant, Carica papaya. Bromelain is most notable for its effectiveness in the reduction of inflammation and decreasing swelling, but the scope of its benefits continues to increase.

 

As a natural anti-inflammatory enzyme, bromelain has many uses. Arthritis patients may reduce the swelling that causes joint pain by taking bromelain. Bromelain may also be helpful for the pain, numbness, tingling, aching and loss of motor and sensory function in the fingers, resulting from carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). Prevention of the adhesiveness of platelets to endothelial cell walls was accomplished with o.1 of doses, and even small amounts may be beneficial to anyone at risk to thrombotic heart attack or stroke. Amylase and Lipase -- Digestive enzymes that break down carbohydrates and fats, respectively.

Serrapeptase -- Serrapeptase is a peptidase that is used worldwide as an anti-inflammatory enzyme, replacing bovine-derived trypsin and chymotrypsin. Serrapeptase, also known as Serratia peptidase, is a proteolytic enzyme isolated from the non-pathogenic enterobacteria Serratia E15. The enzyme is found naturally in the intestine of the silkworm, which is used by the silkworm to dissolve the cocoon and emerge as a moth. When consumed in unprotected tablets or capsules, the enzyme is destroyed by acid in the stomach. However, when enterically coated, the enzyme passes through the stomach unchanged and can be absorbed into the intestine.

Besides reducing inflammation, one of serrapeptase’s most profound benefits is reduction of pain, due to its ability to block the release of pain-inducing amines from inflames tissues. Amla
Also known as Indian gooseberry (Emblica officinalis), is the richest source of Vitamin C. It also contains tannic acid, glucose, protein, cellulose and calcium. Amla is useful for stomach problems, it is antipyretic, hair tonic and never brain tonic. It’s also useful in anemia, hyperacidity and in gynecological problems and epistaxis. Amla is considered to have restorative and preventive properties.

Rutin
Rutin is one of the many existing flavonoids. Flavonoids are a class of water-soluble plant pigments. Flavonoids support health by strengthening capillaries and other connective tissue, and some function as anti-inflammatory, antihistaminic and antiviral agents. Rutin and several other flavonoids may also protect blood vessels. Rutin was shown to stimulate wound healing in rats and augment the tensile strength of scar tissue significantly.

When Vitalzym kicks in, there will be no doubt in your mind that it is working! An activation dose is the amount of enzymes you need to begin to feel a benefit from the product. There is no toxicity from enzymes, (no LD-50). What are Enzymes?
Enzymes are found in every cell of every living plant and animal, including humans. Enzymes are biocatalysts, which means that they either begin a reaction or cause a reaction to speed up. Without enzymes life would not exist.

How do enzymes work?
Enzymes work by virtue of their shape. An enzyme molecule can be compared, in shape at least, to many short strings of pearls (amino acids) strung together. This long string folds in on itself as certain sequences of amino acids (pearls) are more attracted to each other than to other sequences, thus giving the enzymes a specific shape. At one point on the surface of this string of pearls, there exists something which looks like a keyhole. This is called the active site on the enzyme. When matched with its specific coenzyme (a vitamin, mineral or trace element) this lock has the exact inverse contour of the key, which is contained in the molecule of the enzyme’s substrate (the molecule that the enzyme wants to transform into a different molecule). When the substrate appears, it inserts the key into the lock. The molecular structure of the substrate is transformed into a different molecular structure, and both enzyme and the newly-formed molecule go on their merry little ways.

Comment: I started Vitalzym some months ago with six capsules a day.

 

I quickly started getting very painful flare ups in the places where I had arthritis and then in new places. I finally thought that since the pain started with the taking of Vitalzym I would stop and see. After about a week the pain started to lessen, but it's taken several weeks for the symptoms to return to what is normal for me except for the left hip and one finger which remain very painful.

 

I took the Vitalzym to a naturopath who is familiar with the product, and he was very surprised when I told him of my experience. He tested the product on me and concluded that I could tolerate no more than one capsule. I am not sure I am going to feel confident enough to try even one capsule any time soon!

Response: Certainly is odd to see a natural anti-inflammatory causing inflammation.

 

While I am not a doctor, I can only guess there are other issues at play here. Not sure what, but there must be something else. What I can say is what other doctors that I work with have done.

 

Start at 1 cap 2x daily on an empty stomach. (1 cap a day with any moderate to severe condition is going to do very little if anything at all.) Continue taking 1 cap 2x daily on an empty stomach for about 2 weeks. Afterward, increase each dose by 1 capsule. Then continue at that dose for another 2 weeks.
Continue increasing in this manner until you see some type of benefit.

 

Once you start seeing a benefit, whatever dose you are on at that point should be maintained for a solid 60 days. After that, you can begin to start reducing your dose -- in the same manner that you were increasing -- about 1 cap per dose every couple of weeks. You will then be working your way back down to your lower maintenance dose.

All of his major coronary arteries were completely occluded and Mayo clinic had tried laser, robotic therapy, root rooter,... and for five years running, he had spent over $10,000 for a month of failed treatments each year.

Surgery . . . I have had two C- sections. My sons are now 14 and 8. For some time, I have experienced discomfort on the left side of my incision mostly around the time of the month. Osteoarthritis . . . I am 49 and have developed osteoarthritis in both knees over the past 10 years. I had arthroscopic surgery on one knee about 7 years ago, but within a couple of years, I couldn't tell which one I'd had the surgery on. Both were equally painful. I was taking Vioxx for a year or so, and would gladly have continued it without question if it went back on the market. I felt I was only putting off the inevitable--a knee replacement--as long as I could. I won't take Vioxx again, even if it is sold again. Joint Pain . . . After 4 wks on Vitalzym, my knees are doing great. I never plan to use ibuprofen or celebrex or any of those things again. I was on my feet all day Saturday and then worked in my yard about 5 hrs Sunday, and I feel great! I'm also taking glucosamine, MSM and vitamin E. (but I never had any luck with those before) When I do have pain, I use my magnetic knee brace, but I have not even thought about it for the past week. Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue, Pulmonary Fibrosis and Uterine Fibroids . . . Hi I'm back with great news. BACKGROUND: Female age 54 and in menopause since age 47. Severe fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome since 1997. Diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis in August 2004. This is a scarring of the lungs that, in my case, was caused from GERD (acid reflux) that had spilled over to my lungs for years whenever I was sleeping on my stomach. Also, I've had two uterine fibroids for the last five years. One the size of a grapefruit one the size of an orange. My abdomen has been the size of a four month pregnancy. Since I was in menopause the doctor's advised a hysterectomy. Instead I decided to try Vitalzym a little over three months ago.

I started Vitalzym for those three main reasons; Fibro/chronic fatigue, pulmonary fibrosis and uterine fibroids. On about the fifth day I had severe detox reactions so I had to cut back from 12-15 capsules down to 6 a day. After about a week I started increasing the dose slowly until I reached 20-25 per day, which is what I'm still taking. Around day 8 I started getting sharp and almost constant pains in my left ovary that just recently has subsided. I had hot "twinges" in my legs and ankles that ended the first month. Twinges in my left hip that still occur and very strange sensations of warmth and burning in my lungs just this past month. In the beginning the pain of fibromyalgia worsened to the point of almost giving up on the enzymes.

After three months, my cholesterol dropped 46 points and my LDL dropped 49 points! My chronic fatigue seems better, because I don't seem to require as much sleep as I've been requiring for eight years! EIGHT YEARS!

But the best news is I had another pulmonary test just last week. -- the result: My doctor was amazed and said "one part of the test showed your scar tissue to be significantly reduced! He then called it a Miracle! I told him it was the enzymes I was taking, and he just looked at me like I was a nut case. He gathered his composure and then said, Well, whatever you're doing . . . keep it up! I've been able to lower my oxygen intake while at home and not even take it with me on most outings! I know this resulted from Vitalzym and prayer!

I don't know yet if my fibroids have shrunk for sure. I think they have shrunk some but I won't know for sure until February when I have another ultrasound. I'll certainly let everyone on the other message board know how that goes.

I have taken many vitamins, herbs etc. since 1997 when I was diagnosed with fibro./chronic fatigue but nothing ever seemed to help much. In the last month I added Niacin and Bio DIM and have been dieting, which may have contributed to the drop in cholesterol. Linda, US

Post Surgery . . . I find it difficult to describe how wonderful I feel ! In December I was a kidney donor. Of course I was extremely uncomfortable. I was on the way to recovery when in March I got the flu. I do not have enough hands to cough and sneeze, and felt as bad after the flu as I had in January. My boss suggested Vitalzym and I was not convinced it would help, but decided to try it. It is amazing!!! After only one and one half days I realized I felt much better. Myriad of Symptoms . . . I have been on Vitalzym for only 4 days, today being day 5. Already the pain in my R. saddle joint is less. Radiation Damage . . . My name is Peder Heineman. I am writing you to thank you for your miracle product, VITALZYM. In 1945, at age 6, my friend, Bobbie and I fell into a pocket of radiation while playing the game Red Rover. We did not know it was radiation then, but immediately our lungs started burning badly. Betty, a girl slightly older than us, helped us up. It felt like we had the wind knocked out of us, but it did not go away. Bobbie died within a few months, and Betty died at age 35. I survived, but had the worst Asthma, and scar tissue on my lungs (and in and on my organs and throughout my body). I could exert myself for only 2 or 3 minutes and I would collapse gasping for air. Chronic Pain . . . Last week I received a sample bottle of Vitalzym. I heard about it when you sent me a cassette tape. I hardly ever listen to those, but I was just going on a long drive when it came, and decided to listen on the way. I am an acupuncturist and RN, and have been trying out various enzymes, mostly with very little success. I got my bottle of Vitalzym in the afternoon, and decided to take one before going to bed. When I woke up the next morning, I went down to get my coffee as usual, but I noticed something odd when coming back up the stairs. My knees didn't hurt. Now I don't normally have a lot of knee pain, just what I call old age creeping up.

 

But what made me stop and notice was that I had NO knee pain. I even walked back down and up the stairs just to make sure. I kept taking my enzymes that day, and several times went up and down the stairs just to make sure I wasn't hurting. Inflammation/Facial Injury . . . I think your Vitalzym is a fantastic product! I have heard that it is good for inflammation and yesterday (Father's Day Eve) I was in the perfect situation to test it.

My husband and I were sitting on the sofa playing with our beautiful and vivacious 18-month old son. It was past his bedtime and he was a bit rambunctious. After several minutes of tickling his tummy and the bottoms of his feet, it happened! He was sitting on my lap when he decided to try a back flip. He pushed off my legs and threw himself backwards (head first).

 

I guess he was in my "straight-on blind spot" because I never saw him coming. The next thing I knew, the back of his head smashed into my nose. I felt and heard something crunch and the pain was incredible. After the initial shock had passed, we determined the cartilage in my nose had been ripped off the bone and had torn. But the bones were somehow still intact.

 

Before I even finished making the ice pack, my nose, cheeks and eyes were starting to swell. So, I quickly took 20 Vitalzym Capsules and then spent the better part of an hour with my nose packed in ice. By the time I retired for the evening, the external swelling had already disappeared and there wasn't any internal swelling at all! The next morning, there was a tiny bit of swelling and my nose and checks had a nice "rosy" color to them. I took 10 more Vitalzym Capsules and all of the swelling again disappeared. Plus, the pain and discomfort was also almost totally gone! I was really concerned that I would have at least one black eye or a huge black place across the bridge of my nose, but I didn't have any visible bruising either!

Fibroid Tumor . . . They first discovered my fibroid after a c-section with my only son. I was 31 at the time. It was the size of a lemon. It has been 7 years since, and my fibroid grew to the size of a large grapefruit. For the last year my left leg always hurt and felt awful most of the time. The constant pain from the pressure in my abdomen was just annoying. Additionally, my bladder would swell so much overnight that my stomach looked deformed in the morning. Consequently I was running to the bath room more than 12 times a day and 2-3 times during the night. I tried colonics, vitamins, quitting certain types of food, acupuncture, yoga, herbs, cod liver pouches . . .bla bla bla.

I finally went to see a doctor about removing it. I did not want invasive surgery. I looked into Uterine Fibroid Embolization, but this would limit my chance of getting pregnant in the future. I then made an appointment for Laproscopic Myomectomy, and it was schedule for May of 2005. About a month and half ago, I started using Vitalzym. I also discontinued soy milk and only ate organic milk, cheese, meat and chicken.

Wow is all I can say! Since then I no longer have that insane pressure in my abdomen, pain in my left leg, and my stomach is not usually swelled up in the morning. I know its working and I don't need an ultrasound. I feel great too. I'm no longer stiff. My body feels like a rubber band most of the time. I take 15 a day and just ordered my second large bottle. Scar Tissue . . . I just had to share this with everyone! I have been taking Vitalzym for about two weeks. I had surgery 20 years ago because of endometriosis and there was a resulting scar on top of my pubic bone about five inches across that developed into a very unattractive keloid. Diabetic Challenges . . . About a year ago, my friend's mother was scheduled to have her legs amputated in three weeks because of diabetes and other disorders. Blocked Arteries . . . I am 56 years of age. I had bypass heart surgery last year where they put 4 stents in my heart. One of the main arteries to my heart was almost closed. Six months after the surgery, the doctors told me the arteries had plugged back up. He told me there was nothing more they could do for me and basically sent me home to fend for myself.

When I went to see Dr. Murphy, my circulation was very poor in my legs, I couldn’t sleep on my left side with my knees together and could only tolerate riding in a car for 45 minutes to an hour. I divided the bottle between us three: we each got 150 count. We started taking it the very same day and with in two days I first observed that I slept more soundly . . . (its hard to describe) its more of a feeling. I mentioned that to William and his reply was, “but Laya, its only been two days, how can you tell ?” I told him I just feel different when I wake up in the morning. Two days later William tells me, “you know, I sleep better too.

 

It feels like my muscles are able to relax while I am sleeping.” William has Fibromyalgia -Myofascial syndrome. Spinal Pain . . . Got my Vitalzym yesterday - took 6, (3 in pm and night) and woke up PAIN FREE this morning! It works! No stiffness, no problems!
Chiropractor treatment was good to correct, but still I ached, especially after sleeping or sitting! I am SO EXCITED!

I took the VITALZYM twice yesterday, and I awoke with less stiffness this morning - slept like a log! I really feel great!

I had a thin disc near the base of my spine that was irritated by passive exercise machines I mistakenly used! Had to come downstairs on my butt one morning! Have a great chiropractor who has a decompression machine which gradiently stretches, allows fluid to fill, and I've had 23 treatments.

 

Better, but still feeling not 100% all the time. Fortunately, I have a high pain threshold, so when I say I hurt, I HURT.

Fibromyalgia, Surgery and Soreness . . . I wanted to tell you that I’ve been taking Vitalzym faithfully since mid-February to treat my Fibromyalgia. I’ve had dramatic results. I usually take 9 capsules per day, and increase to 12-15 if I really feel bad or overdo things.

This has allowed me to function at a higher level than anytime in the past five years since I was diagnosed with the condition. This includes doing heavy gardening, house cleaning, and my regular exercises (Qigong, stretching, yoga, walking, Bowflex). I’m 48 and have most likely had Fibromyalgia since I was a teenager. I still have pain everyday, but it’s more manageable.

Chronic Fatigue . . . I have tried every treatment under the sun for my chronic fatigue syndrome. I find that soaking my body with the Miracle II soap in a hot tub before going to bed at night helps me more than my oxygen treatments.
