Superior Benefits of the Barley Grain
Barley is a relatively under-utilized and unexploited grain. Its unique composition and competent functionality give it high nutritional potential.
There is a wide array of scientific studies trumpeting the health benefits of whole grains (the bran, the germ and the endosperm).
The product contains phyto-nutrients, natural plant-based chemicals (vitamins, minerals, fiber, antioxidants and an assortment of other disease-fighting compounds).
Studies show, of all the grains, Barley is a top-notch source of soluble fiber (the type that regulates blood sugar readings and decreases blood cholesterol levels).
Barley also contains compounds called tocotrienols, which have shown to decrease cholesterol production.
Two Harvard studies show that people consuming whole-grain products are less likely to experience weight gain over the years. In May 2006 the American FDA announced that it has finalized a rule that allows foods containing a required amount of barley to claim that they reduce the risk of coronary heart disease, specifically, whole-grain barley.
Whole-grain barley is chock full of antioxidants (a richer source than fruits and vegetables) and has six times the magnesium and four times the potassium of refined grains (both important players in maintaining healthy blood pressure readings).
Whole-grain fiber plays an important role in maintaining bowel regularity.
Barley promotes a natural anti-inflammatory process, which may help in controlling symptoms of inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, asthma and colitis.

Crude Fiber
|
Crude fiber underestimates true fiber and is the most unsatisfactory principle of Proximate Analysis (often replaced by Detergent Fiber System). Fiber is indigestible material that stimulates the intestines to peristalsis (involuntary contraction). Increased insoluble fiber (crude fiber) in one’s diet correlates with better protection against heart disease, softens stool effectively treating constipation, is linked with reducing risk of colon cancer and fills the stomach, reducing appetite leading to weight loss. Soluble fiber lowers cholesterol and blood sugar levels in people with diabetes. Increased soluble fiber in the diet decreases the body’s need for insulin.

Crude Fat
|
Fat is essential to provide energy and support growth. See schedule #5 re fats. Fats and oils (difference is melting points) are simple lipids that are esters of glycerol and fatty acids.

Ash
|
Foods are of two types, acid or alkaline, when referring to the ash value of a food. Ash value is the type of residue that remains after the food is digested. The body functions best with an internal chemistry being slightly alkaline. The more acid the cells become, the sicker we are and feel. Our bodies produce acid and need alkaline to neutralize acid. We must supply alkaline from outside sources. The main determining factor of alkaline is the organic minerals. Sprouted grains have higher alkaline ash value. Ash is what is left after all the organic nutrients have been burned off, and it contains all the mineral elements jumbled together. Ash is not very useful as a measure, but is used to calculate Nitrogen-Free extract.

Acid detergent insoluble nitrogen is the nitrogen remaining in the acid detergent fiber and ADIN-protein is the protein remaining in the acid detergent fiber. All proteins contain 16% nitrogen. The lower the ADF, the higher the digestibility or available energy.

Questions, Comments and Answers
Q: How was BarleyGold™ originated?
A: BarleyGold™ was first formulated with Agriculture Canada to test barley feed with broiler chickens. The Growth Enhancement Method (G.E.M.) combined with the Nutrient Stabilization Process (N.S.P.) enhanced the value of the feed enormously. Physiological results were also remarkable. So much so, that it was believed that people could also benefit greatly from this enhanced barley. With further study and development the all-natural whole food product that is known today as BarleyGold™ came into existence.
Q: What research has been done on the efficacy of this product?
A: As mentioned, testing was done on broiler chickens. They make good test subjects as they don’t respond to placebos and because they have a relatively short life span, so extensive batteries of tests could be completed. The bioassay (animal feed tests determining efficacy’s tests) concluded the broiler chickens had higher red and white blood cells, higher bone density, stronger hearts, leaner but not heavier muscle mass, and a higher intestinal viscosity.
Q: How long do I need to stay on the BarleyGold™ before I start noticing positive results?
A: The results and time will vary from person to person as everyone has a different past of health and needs. We suggest three months of consistent use before the BarleyGold™ has had a chance to show its benefits.
Q: Can I take BarleyGold when I am pregnant or nursing?
A: It’s always good to talk to your health practitioner whether they think it would be a good idea or not. If you have been on the BarleyGold™ for awhile, much of the initial detoxing has been done and this nutritious food would have a lot to offer your growing fetus. BarleyGold™ is a food . . . a very nutritious one.
Q: How long can I store this product?
A: If the BarleyGold™ is stored in a sealed container in your cupboard or on your counter, that is usually good enough. If the climate is humid, it is best to keep it in the fridge and definitely sealed. Do not leave the BarleyGold™ in an overheated car, or in any heat above 35 degrees C (105 degrees F).
Freezing the BarleyGold™ is fine but will not postpone the life expectancy any further. Life expectancy is a bit over a couple of years, which is a remarkable shelf life that is due to our natural process called Nutrient Stabilization Process (NSP). The container will have a best before date.
Q: What is a healing event?
A: A healing event occurs when your body is ridding itself of toxins, and cleaning up old injuries and ailments. You will ache in such areas of healing or just feel tired. It is your body’s way of slowing you down so it can repair the damage. Embrace these times, rest and keep warm.
Q: How long can a healing event take?
A: Often a couple to a few days. If it is longer, it may rather be an allergic reaction to a food you are consuming. The BarleyGold™ serving sizes should keep these events to a minimum. If the healing event is too much, simply go off the BarleyGold™ for 3 days and then start at the lower suggested serving before your last intake size.
Q: What does BarleyGold™ look and taste like?
A: BarleyGold™ is in a flour-like, powdered form. It has the ability to take on the tease of whatever it is put into. In other words, it can be easily camouflaged for children if put into applesauce, yogurt or even chocolate nut/ rice milk. Alone it has a taste similar to nutty flour. The simplest means of intake is to take a spoonful and wash it down with water. You can put it in juice, your favorite smoothie or nut / rice milk. Stir it into your cereal or cooled porridge. You can be quite creative, but avoid putting the BarleyGold™ in anything that is over 35 degrees Celsius (105 degrees F).
Do not microwave, cook or bake with BarleyGold™.
Q: Is there gluten in BarleyGold™?
A: In regular barley grain there is gluten. However, gluten intolerances are developed from eating food that is not sprouted, fermented or activated in the raw form, thus the body cannot break down the gluten. The BarleyGold™ ahs the active enzymes present needed to break down the gluten proteins inside the grain.
Since celiacs are deficient in these enzymes, they should start with a few grains a day and slowly build up over time until their body has enough active enzymes to digest and assimilate the BarleyGold™ properly.
Q: Will I see my diet change:
A: Customers often feel more full on days that the BarleyGold™ is consumed. As the metabolism is re-booted, the body becomes more in tune with what it needs and what it does not like.
Q: What are the properties in the two new products you are selling, the Flax Hull Lignan and BarleyGold, and do how they compare to a fine-quality fish oil or krill oil? Specifically, are the nutritional needs of the brain, such as are addressed by fish oil/ krill oil, addressed by Flax Lignans and/or BarleyGold? J.R.
A: Some fish oils are an excellent source of nutrients. Flax is also an excellent source of the omega 3 and 6 oils, yet this is not the main reason to be taking the Flax Hull Lignan. If someone is interested in having a high quality and quantity of oil, the Flax Hull Lignan will supply some, but she should supplement it with another product. We will be getting a very high whole flax product together to market, but it will be in the new year.
Regarding the BarleyGold, it is one of the highest sources of glucosamine, which not only is regarded as a brain food but helps regenerate the intestine. Our intestines start to die at about age 25 and subsequently add to the deterioration process, certainly affecting the brain and all the other organs. The toxins are not removed as efficiently and nutrients, whether they are oils, enzymes, vitamins, minerals or other nutrients, are not able to move into the body.
Microbial populations are changed, influencing the complete biological terrain. These biochemical changes further influence how we feel and think. This is why in initiating our protocol we emphasize the process is truly an "awakening a new lifestyle." As the body starts to rebalance itself, healing occurs, brain fog is cleared and bodily functions move toward normalization. This is a lifetime commitment -- not a one or two week trial to see if things work.
The body is the genius and with the building blocks, it will repair itself -- whether the immune system with the Flax Hull Lignan or the intestines with the BarleyGold. It seems the longer one is on the products, the deeper and more complete the body repairs itself. I also see that there is not a single item that is a "cure all," but once the intestine starts to heal, the ecosonoid metabolism, or body/brain communication system, starts to teach the individual what/when and how much other input it requires.
Availability
Each container offers 24 ounces (681 grams) in powder form –- approximately a one-month supply. Initially, however, the first one or two jars will last longer (1-1/2 months to 2 months) since you start out slowly . . . the slow integration of dense nutrition is best, so there is no major 'healing event' (too rapid detox).
Usage
Adults: Level One: Most people will commence and stay on Level 1. It is essential that if you start on BarleyGold 1, you stay on it for at least 90 days to allow your body to detoxify and process. If, after 90 days, you have become more active (as we often are in warmer months), you can mix some of the Level 2 to your daily Level 1 intake or you can move into Level 2. Taking BarleyGold 2 after the first 90 days on Level 1 is your personal choice. There is a higher concentration of protein in Level 2 and your lifestyle may indicate more protein is desirable. Use your intuition to determine if this is best for your body.
As a general guideline, it is recommended that you commence with half a teaspoon per day, mixed with a cold liquid or sprinkled on cold food. If there are no adverse reactions from the body, then slowly increase the amount until you are taking two tablespoons each day. This will most likely be over 1-2 months’ time. It is easy to increase the dosage by half teaspoon increments. You may notice a smoother movement in your bowels and a general sense of overall wellbeing. The detoxifying effects will depend on your body’s current state of health as you commence using the Barley Gold.
Adults: Level Two: "O" blood types, high-performance athletes and diabetics have seen quickest results by starting with Level 2. (People who have startred on Level 1 and taken Level 1 for at least 90 days may choose to mix some Level 2 into their daily intake or to take Level 2 instead.)
If you are using BarleyGold Level 2 for the first time and have not been taking the BarleyGold 1, please commence with half a teaspoon and work your way up to two tablespoons, as per the above instructions for BarleyGold 1. Please be aware of detoxifying reactions and go slowly.
Barley Gold Food in General
Each container offers 24 ounces (681 grams) in powder form – Approximately a one-month supply. Initially, however, the first one or two jars will last longer (1-1/2 months to 2 months) since you start out slowly . . . the slow integration of dense nutrition is best, so there is no major 'healing event' (too rapid detox).
Be aware that this powerful product has a way of bringing into balance the body’s organs and metabolism. It generally follows the pathway of detoxifying the intestines first, then the kidneys, next is the liver, fourthly the circulatory system, the nervous system and after about 4 – 6 months to a year, the lungs. Again, it depends upon the state of your inner terrain as to how long it will take to move through this process.
Caution: Natural wholesome foods like barely or flax may counteract the effects of prescription medications. Please consult with your doctor or qualified health care provider if you are on any prescription medication before taking these products.
Healing Event: A healing event (sometimes called a healing crisis or the herxheimer effect) occurs when your body is ridding itself of toxins and cleaning up old injuries and ailments. You will ache in such areas of healing or just feel tired. You may feel as if you are catching the flu. It is your body’s way of slowing you down so it can repair the damage. Embrace these times, rest and keep warm. In the event, however, that the discomfort becomes too great, slow down the detoxification by reducing your usage or temporarily stopping for a short time. When you are ready, start back on the Barley at ½ the rate and work back up to full servings.
Lungs: It must be noted that when the lungs are healing (approx 4 -6 months from first use), you will feel like you are coming down with a bad flu bug. It is important when this happens that you go off the BarleyGold immediately, as when the toxins are being thrown out of the lungs the fluid can progress to a more serious condition. This can be indicated by excessive mucous starting to appear, and then it could go to a coughing reaction. If somebody is a smoker, it will be very noticeable when large chunks of junk will start to come up from the aveoli. Once things get back to normal without any coughing or congestion, start the BarleyGold at ½ rate and work back up to the full servings.
Continued healing occurs throughout the body the longer you take the product and then acts to slow down any degeneration
When mixing with food or drinks, do not use with anything over the temperature of 35 degrees Celsius (105 degrees Fahrenheit).
Babies and Children: This is a raw, live, ancient food from which many babies and children benefit.
Babies: Start with small amounts added to their pablum or cereal. Start with ¼ teaspoon when introducing it into their pablum, and slowly double the intake up to 2 teaspoons when they are still small.
Children: Start with ½ teaspoon and work up to 1 tablespoon.
Teens: Follow the suggested serving as for adults.
Animals: The suggested servings for humans were worked out based on an average weight of 140-200 pounds. So minimizing the serving to a small animal is crucial, and of course, a larger serving for a big animal is preferred. The guideline below show how much to start. (Since your pet cannot tell you how they feel, a close eye on how they are doing is a must.) If the animal is sick and has ailments, it is recommended that they start on a smaller amount than suggested for their weight. Healthy and high-performance animals may need more than the highest serving before and after their performances.
If your pet is doing well with serving sizes, you can double the amount weekly until they are at the suggested maximum.
10 pounds and up: Start with ½ teaspoon – work up to a maximum of 1 teaspoon
25 pounds and up: Start with 1/2 teaspoon – work up to a maximum of 1 tablespoon
50 pounds and up: Start with ½ teaspoon – work up to a maximum of 1-1/2 tablespoons
75 pounds and up: Start with ½ teaspoon – work up to a maximum of 2 tablespoons
100 pounds and up: Start with 1 teaspoon – work up to a maximum of 2 tablespoons
200 pounds and up: Start with 1 teaspoon – work up to a maximum of ½ cup
800-2,000 pounds and up: Large animal: start with ½ cup – work up to maximum of 2 cups
Do not feed BarleyGold to rodent pets; ie., hamsters, gerbils, mice, rabbits, etc. This product is too much for their little bodies and could be detrimental.
Usage for Those with Gluten Intolerance
In regular barley grain there is gluten. However, gluten intolerances are developed from eating food that is not sprouted, fermented or activated in the raw form, thus the body cannot break down the gluten. The BarleyGold has the active enzymes present needed to break down the gluten proteins inside the grain.
Since Celiacs are deficient in these enzymes, they should start with a few grains a day and slowly build up over time until their body has enough active enzymes to digest and assimilate the BarleyGold properly.

The carb phobia is finally letting up. Not all carbohydrate-rich foods are equal.
The 2004 Fifty-Plus conference in New Orleans (theme: Whole Grains Go Mainstream) presented a wide array of scientific studies trumpeting the health benefits of whole grains.
Sorting through the whole grains products to come up with the most healthful option is not always an easy task.
Whole grains . . . the bran, the germ, the endosperm. In refined grains the bran and germ are removed. Bran and germ are the nutritional powerhouse behind the benefits provided by whole grains.
Whole grains contain vitamins, minerals, fiber and an assortment of other disease-fighting compounds.
A US Agriculture Research Service recent study found links between eating whole grains and decreased risk of heart disease, stroke, certain cancers and diabetes along with easier waist management.

I am finding it to be a real challenge to alter my eating habits. Note that I am using the Barley Level 2. That is because I am an O blood type and generally need the additional protein that Level 2 offers. If you are diabetic or if you are a high performance athlete, you would also need to work with Level 2. All others should work with Level 1, and in many ways it will be more appropriate and beneficial for you. Ken Campbell, from Breakthru, tells us that if you are using Level 1, you are more likely to experience weight loss. If you are working with Level 2, you would be more likely to gain muscle mass . . . and most women would probably not like that result.
- While we were away last week, my wife began to feel like she was coming down with a cold or perhaps the flu. Considering all of our products with which she has been working, that seemed unlikely, even though all of the symptoms were there. THEN, it occurred to us that the BarleyGold was causing a detox of her lungs, and we had very strong advice from Ken Campbell at Breakthru that when you reach that stage, you should immediately stop taking the BarleyGold for seven to ten days in order to allow your body to gracefully get rid of a lot of mucus and junk in your lungs . . . otherwise, you could actually go into pneumonia from detoxing too fast. Within about three weeks, she was already at the stage of detoxing her liver and had to back off of the Barley almost completely and increase her Flax Hull Lignan intake to a scoop three times a day. After about a week she was able to start working her way back up with the Barley. Getting to the final stage of detox, the lungs, only took her about two months.
In my case, I sailed right through the various detox stages until yesterday when I hit the wall and felt certain that I had the flu. It had been about three months for me. Still a short time, but then I have been using lots of the our products that help with detoxing. When my wife used her pendulum dowsing, she determined that I should be completely off of the BarleyGold for 10 days, and during that time I am to take a scoop of Flax Hull Lignan three times a day, and I am also using the Diamond V - XPC Yeast Culture. While I am on the subject of BarleyGold, you may remember that I expressed concern because I felt like too many people were ordering the Barley Level 2 product for O blood types instead of the Barley Level 1. That was because I had the impression that the O blood types were comparatively rare versus the others. I have always heard that my blood type of O-Negative was pretty rare and thus assumed that O-Positive was also. Several Members graciously informed me that collectively, the O blood types are perhaps in the majority. I stand corrected and apologize. Now I am relieved that the order ratios between Level 1 and Level 2 are just about right, and I will adjust my product ordering to reflect that.
- I continue to be concerned that there is confusion about which BarleyGold product is appropriate for you: BarleyGold Level I or BarleyGold Level 2. That concern stems from the fact that we are selling more Level 2 than Level 1, and statistically that should not be the case. Perhaps a little background will help sort out the two products. The seed stock, genetic stock, that is used to grow and then process the BarleyGold Level 2 dates back at least 2,000 years and would probably have been the strain of barley used by the gladiators to develop strength and muscle mass. It has an extremely high protein content. People with O blood types both crave and need much more protein than the other blood types, as do high performance, competition, athletes. Frankly, I don't yet understand the importance of Level 2 for diabetics, but for now I accept it as valid and suggest that you also do so until we can expand our insight.
The seed stock used to grow and produce the Level 1 BarleyGold is about 500 years old. The Level 1 product actually looks quite different from the Level 2. Level 1, indeed has a golden color to it, whereas, the Level 2 has a sort of grayish color -- the point being that the differences are really not very subtle. My understanding is that the Level 1 has a different nutritional content that makes it more potent for the appropriate blood types, in the area of immune strengthening and weight loss.
Please, please understand that Level 1 and Level 2 does not imply a hierarchy . . . one is not better than the other. Rather, one is more appropriate than the other. For instance, it is not a matter of using Level 1 until you are ready to progress to Level 2. If your body chemistry and lifestyle, etc., indicate that Level 1 is appropriate for you, then you will always stay with Level 1. And that raises another issue that Ken Campbell from Breakthru addresses lightly in response to an inquiry from a Member.
The BarleyGold, and the Flax Hull Lignan, are really not the sort of products that you test out for a few weeks to see if they produce any results. Rather, they are products that produce profound results, but not overnight or in a month or two. If you will make a commitment to stick with them for the longer term, you are going to observe important improvement in your general health, your mental alertness, your energy and your resistance to diseases of all sorts. Don't tell the FDA; however, you just might start seeing some major and irreversible conditions starting to improve or even disappear.
