Superior Benefits of the Barley Grain
Barley is a relatively under-utilized and unexploited grain. Its unique composition and competent functionality give it high nutritional potential.
There is a wide array of scientific studies trumpeting the health benefits of whole grains (the bran, the germ and the endosperm).
The product contains phyto-nutrients, natural plant-based chemicals (vitamins, minerals, fiber, antioxidants and an assortment of other disease-fighting compounds).
Studies show, of all the grains, Barley is a top-notch source of soluble fiber (beta glucan regulates blood sugar readings, decreases insulin resistance and blood cholesterol levels).
Barley also contains compounds called tocotrienols, which have shown to decrease cholesterol production.
Two Harvard studies show that people consuming whole-grain products are less likely to experience weight gain over the years. It’s not just fiber at work, making you feel fuller and more satisfied, but a mix of not-as-yet-identified compounds that may boost metabolic rate or calorie-burning capacity.
There are proven links between eating whole grains and decreased risk of heart disease, stroke, certain cancers, diabetes and easier waist management. A 2003 Japanese study concluded Barley should be recommended to prevent some of these chronic diseases. In May 2006 the American FDA announced that it has finalized a rule that allows foods containing a required amount of barley to claim that they reduce the risk of coronary heart disease, specifically, whole-grain barley.
Whole-grain barley is chock full of antioxidants (a richer source than fruits and vegetables) and has six times the magnesium and four times the potassium of refined grains (both important players in maintaining healthy blood pressure readings).
Whole-grain fiber plays an important role in maintaining bowel regularity.
Barley promotes a natural anti-inflammatory process, which may help in controlling symptoms of inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, asthma and colitis.
Chart of Barley’s Beneficial Nutrients
This chart outlines what is available in Barley and how our body can utilize these nutrients for positive benefits.
Proximates
|
Crude Fiber
|
Crude fiber underestimates true fiber and is the most unsatisfactory principle of Proximate Analysis (often replaced by Detergent Fiber System). Fiber is indigestible material that stimulates the intestines to peristalsis (involuntary contraction). Increased insoluble fiber (crude fiber) in one’s diet correlates with better protection against heart disease, softens stool effectively treating constipation, is linked with reducing risk of colon cancer and fills the stomach, reducing appetite leading to weight loss. Soluble fiber lowers cholesterol and blood sugar levels in people with diabetes. Increased soluble fiber in the diet decreases the body’s need for insulin.
|
|
Crude Fat
|
Fat is essential to provide energy and support growth. See schedule #5 re fats. Fats and oils (difference is melting points) are simple lipids that are esters of glycerol and fatty acids.
|
|
Ash
|
Foods are of two types, acid or alkaline, when referring to the ash value of a food. Ash value is the type of residue that remains after the food is digested. The body functions best with an internal chemistry being slightly alkaline. The more acid the cells become, the sicker we are and feel. Our bodies produce acid and need alkaline to neutralize acid. We must supply alkaline from outside sources. The main determining factor of alkaline is the organic minerals. Sprouted grains have higher alkaline ash value. Ash is what is left after all the organic nutrients have been burned off, and it contains all the mineral elements jumbled together. Ash is not very useful as a measure, but is used to calculate Nitrogen-Free extract.
|
|
Crude Protein
Available Protein
Soluble Protein Available Insoluble Protein
|
Crude protein is the total protein available in a food. Protein is essential for our growth (including bone growth) and is needed to manufacture hormones, antibodies, enzymes and tissue such as muscle. See schedule #5 re Protein.
|
|
Acid Detergent Fiber
ADIN (protein)
ADIN (nitrogen)
|
Acid detergent fiber (celluloses + lignan) can better predict the digestibility of grains than crude fiber. Acid detergent insoluble nitrogen is the nitrogen remaining in the acid detergent fiber and ADIN-protein is the protein remaining in the acid detergent fiber. All proteins contain 16% nitrogen. The lower the ADF, the higher the digestibility or available energy.
|
|
Non Structured
Carbohydrates
|
The represents the highly-digestible carbohydrate fraction. Carbohydrates provide fuel for the body. They are especially important for the brain and central nervous system for cellular recognition and communication. See schedule #5 re carbohydrates.
|
|
Nitrogen-Free
Extract
|
This is a very misleading name indeed as this fraction has nothing to do with nitrogen and is not an extract either. NEF represents the soluble carbohydrate of the food.
|
|
Total Lipids
|
Lipids are various substances that with proteins and carbohydrates constitute the principal structural components of living cells. They are grouped together on the basis of their relative insolubility in water and solubility in non-polar solvents. The four types of lipids are: Fatty Acids (saturated and unsaturated); Complex Lipids (lipoproteins, glycolipids); Glycerides (neutral, phosphoglycerides) and Non-Glycerides (sphingolipids, steroids like cholesterol, waxes.

Usage
Take 1 tablespoon daily for seven days. Gradually work up to 2 tablespoons daily.
Barley Blessings may have detoxifying effect, so if you experience any discomfort, cut back and build up more slowly.
Mix Barley Blessings with water, non-acidic juice or smoothies. You can also add it to cereal, yogurt or apple sauce. Do not mix with hot foods as heat will destroy the active enzymes.
KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN. STORE IN A COOL DRY ENVIRONMENT. AVOID EXCESSIVE HEAT. DO NOT USE IFSEAL IS BROKEN OR MISSING.
Caution: Natural wholesome foods like barely or flax may counteract the effects of prescription medications. Please consult with your doctor or qualified health care provider if you are on any prescription medication before taking these products.
Healing Event: A healing event (sometimes called a healing crisis or the herxheimer effect) occurs when your body is ridding itself of toxins and cleaning up old injuries and ailments. You will ache in such areas of healing or just feel tired. You may feel as if you are catching the flu. It is your body’s way of slowing you down so it can repair the damage. Embrace these times, rest and keep warm. In the event, however, that the discomfort becomes too great, slow down the detoxification by reducing your usage or temporarily stopping for a short time. When you are ready, start back on the Barley at ½ the rate and work back up to full servings.
Continued healing occurs throughout the body the longer you take the product and then acts to slow down any degeneration
Babies and Children: This is a raw, live, ancient food from which many babies and children benefit.
Babies: Start with small amounts added to their pablum or cereal. Start with ¼ teaspoon when introducing it into their pablum, and slowly double the intake up to 2 teaspoons when they are still small.
Children: Start with ½ teaspoon and work up to 1 tablespoon.
Teens: Follow the suggested serving as for adults.
Animals: The suggested servings for humans were worked out based on an average weight of 140-200 pounds. So minimizing the serving to a small animal is crucial, and of course, a larger serving for a big animal is preferred. The guideline below shows how much to start. (Since your pet cannot tell you how they feel, a close eye on how they are doing is a must.)
If the animal is sick and has ailments, it is recommended that they start on a smaller amount than suggested for their weight. Healthy and high-performance animals may need more than the highest serving before and after their performances.
If your pet is doing well with serving sizes, you can double the amount weekly until they are at the suggested maximum.
10 pounds and up: Start with ½ teaspoon – work up to a maximum of 1 teaspoon
25 pounds and up: Start with 1/2 teaspoon – work up to a maximum of 1 tablespoon
50 pounds and up: Start with ½ teaspoon – work up to a maximum of 1-1/2 tablespoons
75 pounds and up: Start with ½ teaspoon – work up to a maximum of 2 tablespoons
100 pounds and up: Start with 1 teaspoon – work up to a maximum of 2 tablespoons
200 pounds and up: Start with 1 teaspoon – work up to a maximum of ½ cup
800-2,000 pounds and up: Large animal: start with ½ cup – work up to maximum of 2 cups
Do not feed Ancient Barley to rodent pets; ie. hamsters, gerbils, mice, rabbits, etc. This product is too much for their little bodies and could be detrimental.

Bovis Scale Reading
If you have researched our Prill Beads and / or Cosmic Energy Stones you may already be familiar with the Bovis scale.
The Bovis scale measures life force and was developed by French physicist Antoine Bovis in the 1930's while conducting research at the Great Pyramids in Egypt. The Bovis scale, or biometer, measures the positive - negative charge of a substance. The reference point for living organisms is 6,500 Bovis energy units. Any measurement below 6,500 units indicates a negative charge which is life-diminishing. Units above 6,500 indicate a positive, or life-enhancing charge. 6,500 units is considered neutral.
Scientists have discovered a direct correlation between the Bovis scale and the direction of spin displayed by an atom or molecule. Atoms registering in the negative Bovis range will spin to the right, or clockwise. Atoms in the positive Bovis range spin, to the left, or counterclockwise. An example from nature of the spin property includes our cellular DNA, which is in a left-turning spiral. In contrast, cancer cells are in a right-turning spin.

Barley is the Health Grain
Barley Blessings has a nutritionally-positive impact on total and LDL cholesterol, blood glucose control, insulin response, satiety and obesity, blood pressure, cancer risk and immune system function when consumed as part of a healthy diet. Barley Blessings contains balanced fiber, including beta-glucan which has been proven in clinical studies to lower cholesterol. Ancient Barley also contains a healthy level of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals.
Nutritional Impact of Barley Blessings
Lipids and Cardiovascular Heart Disease
USDA/ARS clinical studies showed that barley providing 3g and 6g of beta-glucan soluble fiber daily significantly lowered the LDL cholesterol from 6.5% to 11%. It has been estimated that every 1% decrease in serum cholesterol provides a 2-3% reduction in the observed rate of CHD.
Type 2 Diabetes and Insulin Resistance
Soluble fiber has a direct impact on carbohydrate digestion by showing the breakdown of starch to sugar and the absorption of sugar into the blood stream. Clinical trials have shown that barley foods require less insulin to digest standardized levels of carbohydrates resulting in reduced risk of insulin resistance which leads to Type 2 Diabetes. Whole grain Ancient Barley has a glycemic index of 25 compared to brown rice and corn with 55.
Blood Pressure
Epidemiological studies support the relationship between increasing whole grain consumption and lower blood pressure. Ancient Barley stores fiber throughout the grain to provide maximum nutritional benefits.
Satiety and Weight Control
Human clinical trials conclude that consumption of low glycemic index foods are associated with a reduction in subsequent hunger (increased satiety) which leads to lower voluntary caloric intake. Intake of fiber and whole grains are also inversely related to body weight.
Cancer and Immune Function
Barley Blessings contains significant amounts of antioxidants (vitamin E tocotrienols), phenolics (ferulic acid, a non steroidal anti-inflammatory), flavenoids and phytic acid. Diets rich in whole grains like Ancient Barley and low in total fat, saturated fat and cholesterol may reduce the risk of some cancers. The beta-glucan soluble fiber in Ancient Barley may promote a healthy immune system.
The Diabetes Epidemic and Barley Blessings
Diabetes today is a global epidemic (246 million) per the International Diabetes Federation.
Diabetes has exploded in America in the past decade, growing +83% from 1994-2004.
According to the former director of the CDC, diabetes is threatening to overwhelm the US "healthcare" system.
A multi-nutritional approach -- diet (whole foods), exercise, medication and education have proven effective in the diabetes prevention program.
The American Dietary Association recommends diets that are high in soluble fiber, low in fat and sodium and have a low glycemic index.
Ancient Barley is perfectly suited for the diabetic diet. It has a superior nutritional profile with more heart-healthy nutrients and more fiber, potassium and niacin than any other whole grain.
Led by beta-glucan soluble fiber, barley is actually FDA-approved for reducing the risk of heart disease, the #1 threat to diabetics.
Barley Blessings has 55% more beta-glucan soluble fiber per serving than oatmeal as well as 30% more potassium and 500% more niacin.
Many diabetic patients have reported significant improvements in blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol levels when Ancient Barley has been added to their current diabetes management system.

Barley is a Nutritional Powerhouse
As cereal grains go, barley is a winner when it comes to good nutrition. This centuries-old grain is packed with fiber, contains important vitamins and minerals, is slim on fat, and, like all plant products, cholesterol-free. Here’s a closer look:
Fiber
Barley is a great source of dietary fiber and actually contains both soluble and insoluble fiber. Soluble fiber is effective in lowering blood cholesterol and can reduce the risk of heart disease. Soluble fiber is also beneficial in slowing the absorption of sugar and reducing the risk for developing type 2 or non-insulin-dependent diabetes. The insoluble fiber found in barley may be beneficial in helping the body maintain regular bowel function. Insoluble fiber may also help lower the risk for certain cancers such as colon cancer.
Cholesterol and Fat
Like all plant foods, barley is naturally cholesterol-free and low in fat. A 1/2-cup serving of cooked pearl barley, a typical grain serving, contains less than 1/2 gram of fat and only 100 calories. Source: USDA Nutrient Database for Standard Reference 13 (November 1999)
Vitamins and Minerals
Barley contains several vitamins and minerals including niacin (Vitamin B3), thiamine ( Vitamin B1), selenium, iron, magnesium, zinc, phosphorus and copper.
Antioxidants
Barley contains antioxidants, which are also important for maintaining good health. Specifically, antioxidants work to slow down the rate of oxidative damage by gathering up free radicals that form when body cells use oxygen.
Phytochemicals
Barley contains phytochemicals, which are natural plant-based chemicals. Studies indicate that phytochemicals may decrease the risk for certain diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer. More research is needed to confirm these results.

Q&A
Q: I very much enjoy the fluffy quality of the new barley product. I do wonder, though, is it like having white bread with all the nutrients
stripped away which is why it's soft and fluffy? Are all the nutrients of the old BarleyGold intact in the fluffy version?
A: The new barley is soft and fluffy because I insisted that it be that way. They had to buy new equipment in order to grind it that fine. I wanted it to blend very easily into a smoothie without dropping out to the bottom. Nothing is lost in that process but it takes them quite a bit longer to grind it that fine and actually caused my price to go up accordingly, but it was worth it to me. Additionally, the original packaging was only 1-1/3 pounds of product but I insisted that I wanted the jar to contain 1 1/2 pounds . . . that also ran my cost up but it was worth it to me.
In spite of those additional costs, we are still going to be able to offer this product at less cost than our previous barley product without losing any of the quality. The characteristics of this product make it very nearly equal to the BG 2. The protein level is almost the same, the bio-availability is the same and I think the fiber content is actually higher. I think that the product weight is actually the same or higher than the BG 2, so we are talking about much better value with the Barley Blessings.
Newsletter Notes
-Several weeks ago I warned that we would soon see a price increase for the Barley Blessings. Well, it came sooner than expected. We will be forced to raise the retail price from $35 to $45.
- The supplier of Barley Blessings (and the prior product as well) assures me that the new product is vastly superior to any other barley from anywhere in the US, or the world, for that matter. It is grown in a particularly rich vein of soil using a new farming technique developed for barley in particular.
The technique is called Controlled Farming and is proving to be superior to organic farming for a number of reasons. In order to maximize the nutritional value of barley, it is necessary to employ fertilizers and soil-enrichment strategies that are not permitted to an organic farmer if he is to retain his organic certification. Broad spectrum re-mineralization, for example, would not be permitted for a certified organic farmer even though it would dramatically improve the nutritional value of the crop. Said differently, an organic farmer would probably not be allowed to use Rock Dust. I am working toward the opportunity to introduce the developer of Controlled Farming to the Rock Dust. I have sent him a 25-pound bucket and a stack of literature.
When the Japanese discovered this incredible barley, they offered to buy up the entire output of the farm. Fortunately, Mr. Kessler refused that offer and my source is the only mill in North America that has access to this barley. We are blessed and so are our Members. The last good piece of news is that we were able to negotiate such a good price that the October Special price will now be our regular price for Barley Blessings!
- As we have delved into the details of this barley product, we have met some very interesting people and gained some wonderful insights into this particular variety of barley. I first talked to the designer of the barley and she explained that she and her husband focused on creating a barley with a very high protein content that is also very high in fiber. In fact, this barley has the highest fiber content of any grain on the market. Processed, as our barley is, it is 95% bio-available . . . an important quality.
Then we learned that the barley is energized in a way very similar to our energizing techniques. So much so that after the energetic treatment, the Barley powder boasts a Bovis Scale reading in excess of 3 million. Those of you who are familiar with our Cosmic Energy Stones will remember that the Stones also exhibit a Bovis Scale reading in that range. That is why the Cosmic Energy Stone material is such an integral part of our charging process. I have to tell you that this fact sold me on this barley and helped me understand why I have been so drawn to taking it every single day since I received the first sample jar.
- I am really into this new barley and have taken it everyday for about four weeks.
I am putting it into a smoothie each morning and loving it. Somehow, I missed out on the big smoothie fad years ago, but now I am making up for lost time. Paul suggested that I share with the membership how I am making my smoothie each morning, so here goes. (I am sure some members will observe that I am doing some dumb things but don't spoil it for me, I am REALLY enjoying this. It is a dessert for breakfast.) So again, here goes:
I start with a healthy shot of vanilla-flavored almond milk and then add a bit of a vanilla-flavored chai protein drink. Next I add in three raw eggs (no, I am not worried about the salmonella scare). Then I put in about three ounces of our new Humic Fulvic Minerals and a big shot of Karma Cleanse. Now comes the good stuff. I put in two big tablespoons of the new barley and a heaping scoop of the Flax Hull Lignans. Oh yeah . . . and a heaping teaspoon of Living Clay powder. Finally, to sweeten it up, I put in frozen chunks of bananas and frozen chunks of pears that I harvested from my tree in the back yard. That all comes to about 22 ounces of a mushy cold drink that seems remarkably like the drugstore malts from my youth. Yum, yum!
Then I use that drink to take four Sweet Wheat capsules, two Butter/Cod Liver Oil capsules, two Skate Liver Oil capsules, four Serracore capsules, and four capsules of just butter from Green Pasture.
With that sort of nutritious breakfast, it is usually late afternoon before I am even thinking about being hungry again. I am sure that not many would go for my full regimen, but you might consider some parts of it. It is an easy and tasty way to work a lot of good things into your daily routine. It has always been difficult for me to take a lot of our products at one time because it bores me to sobs to just chug down a bunch of capsules with a glass of water and it upsets my stomach in the deal . . . this way works for me.
Testimonials
- I took the new barley home this weekend to play with it. I really like it. The new fine grind makes it possible to enjoy it even when just mixed into a glass of water or juice. Since it does not dissolve but mixes in the liquid, there is still some texture that is noticeable and it still settles, but not as quickly as the BarleyGold did. There are not large hulls floating on the surface like before. I think this batch tasted fresher as well. It had a great malty flavor that was great in a smoothie. I made a smoothie with some milk, bananas, and yogurt and the nutty flavor of the barley was a great addition to this. This is a far superior product. We might consider figuring a new measure though. This product is much finer and so you'll get more product in the same measure. P.J., Texas
